Meet our Team

at Valley Hope Church

STAFF

Anthony Rodriguez

Senior Pastor

Anthony Rodriguez has been pastor of Valley Hope since Fall 2011. He served as a preacher and leader of Isight (which was Valley Hope’s original name) since his days as a student in Montreat College, when the church was started in a bar in Black Mountain. After a year serving in Cape Town, South Africa, Anthony entered studies full-time at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Charlotte. He graduated and became an EPC Commissioned Pastor in 2012. He was ordained as a Teaching Elder in 2017. Anthony serves Valley Hope as a preacher and pastor and by leading the elder team. Anthony and the elders are responsible for discerning and communicating Valley Hope’s vision while caring for and equipping the people for the work of the Gospel in whatever context God calls them. He also serves as an adjunct professor at Montreat College. Anthony enjoys trying to stay active at the gym, playing and watching soccer, or golfing, mostly badly. And of course, he’s probably reading several books from the various stacks around his house and office.

Anthony married his best friend, Erin, in 2006, following his graduation from Montreat. Together they have three beautiful daughters, Ryann, Alethia, and Hope and one son, Valor. Erin works in construction and remodeling, working with her hands to make beautiful things. If she’s not working at her job, she’s probably at home building something else to make their lives better.

The Rodriguez family loves Valley Hope and is thrilled to be in the Swannanoa Valley, continuing to invest in the community that has given so much to them for so long.

Sam Chastain

Executive Director

Sam and his family have been attending Valley Hope Church since 2022. In January 2025 Sam was humbled and honored to come on staff at the church to assist in implementing the mission & vision of the church, support the staff, oversee operations, and help facilitate the Youth Ministry. Prior to working at Valley Hope Sam spent nine years in various leadership roles in Corporate America and five years as an entrepreneur/General Contractor focused on construction and investment real estate.

Sam and his wife Bethany have always been passionate about the children of God coming into a full understanding of their identity as Sons & Daughters made righteous by the blood of Christ. Together they have a background in leading youth ministry, church planting, leading a house church, and discipling believers into greater intimacy with the Lord. They were married in 2012 and together have four beautiful children.

Sam loves any sport that involves hitting a ball, being outdoors with his family, eating (anything), laughing and playing guitar.

Ted Yap

Church Planting Resident

Ted grew up in Old Fort, NC, and attended NC State University. While earning a Master’s in Horticulture Science (ask him about it sometime!), he began to sense a call towards vocational ministry. After working in a variety of church contexts and roles in both Raleigh and Cleveland, Ohio, he is excited about the potential to plant a new church in the future. Ted and his wife, Ashley, have a growing family. Together, they are passionate about community, discipleship, and advancing the gospel through church planting.

Ben Lillard

Pastoral Resident

Ben lives in Swannanoa with his amazing wife, Tiffany (married 2009), and two daughters. The Lillards joined the Valley Hope community (formerly known as iSight) in 2013 and moved to the Swannanoa Valley in 2015. Ben served multiple terms on Valley Hope’s session. After nearly ten years at Black Mountain Home for Children, he is enjoying a new thing – pastoral residency – as he finishes seminary studies.

Tiffany and Ben count it an incredible blessing and enormous grace to have grown up in and with Valley Hope, and to be raising their girls here. They enjoy seeing how God directs paths, heals, and brings life and hope to people against all odds. God is Father of the fatherless, protector of widows, he settles the solitary in a home, and he leads out the prisoners to prosperity (Psalm 68:5-6)!

Some of Ben’s favorite things to do are spending time with people, sitting in a coffee shop, being in the woods, hiking, going on family trips to new places, and basketball (when the ball is going through the net, all of life seems right). Please feel free to reach out to Ben – he’d truly love to talk with you!

Amy Berry

Connections & Missional Engagement

Amy Berry has served as the Director of Discipleship for Valley Hope Church since the Fall of 2020. She graduated from Furman University in 2001 where she discovered the ministry of Young Life and felt a call to be in relational ministry. After she and Phil were married in 2003, they moved to Gwinnett County in Georgia where they were part of a Young Life/ church partnership for the next 4 years. They learned a ton about youth ministry, church work, nonprofits, fundraising and the importance of community. Phil was asked to come work at Camp Ridgecrest for Boys where he had been coming since he was 9 years old so they packed up and moved to Black Mountain, NC. Phil currently serves as Executive Director of Ridgecrest Camps. From Fall of 2007-Fall of 2020, Amy served on the Young Life staff of Asheville/Buncombe County in various roles until God asked her to do something new and serve at Valley Hope. Amy is passionate about people learning how to follow Jesus every day of their lives while always having eyes to see others that do not yet know him.

Amy and Phil have 2 daughters, Piper and Lily. Piper attends Samford University and Lily is at Owen High School. Amy is passionate about our schools and helping people in our Valley that may not have resources that they need. She wants the people of Valley Hope to be a people that is always looking up to God, in to love each other and out to see who is there to be brought into God's family.

Amy loves walking and hiking, reading, eating good food and drinking good drinks and traveling. Please let her know if you ever want to go on a walk or get a cup of coffee!

Jeremiah Swann

Church Planting

Jeremiah has lived his whole life in the Swannanoa Valley, where he attended Owen High School and then received his degree in business management for Montreat College in 2001.  Jeremiah has been a residential contractor for 25 years building homes and small housing developments all over Buncombe County.  In 2010 he was part of an outreach service, with VHC’s sister church Christ Community Church-Montreat, called Valley Fellowship. It was with this group of people that the Lord first gave Jeremiah the desire to see a church planted in his hometown of Black Mountain.  That desire would lead him to take an intern position with Valley Hope Church (then Isight Church) in 2015 to help develop a small group ministry. Jeremiah served Valley Hope Church as the Church Life Director/Director of Operations from early 2016 until the fall of 2021. When he is not working or with his family Jeremiah can be found playing golf.

In 2005 Jeremiah married his wonderful wife Becky. Together they have two amazing children, Ellen and Jude.  Becky is a talented artist who has served Valley Hope for years as the leader of the Liturgical Arts and Prayer teams as well as leading worship on Sundays. She has a big heart for connecting people to the healing offered to them by Jesus and has been an inspirational example to her husband as to what it looks like to follow Jesus in all areas of life.

Jeremiah has returned to the staff at VHC because he has a lasting desire to see churches planted and to be a part of the work Jesus is already doing to expand the Kingdom of God.

Jen Aitken

Children's Ministry Director

Jen Aitken serves as the Director of Children's Ministry at Valley Hope. Jen graduated from Houghton College with a degree in Vocal Performance and then later received her Elementary Teaching license from UNC Asheville. She had a blast teaching Kindergarten at Asheville Christian Academy before becoming a stay-at-home mom. As a stay-at-home mom, Jen taught voice lessons part-time and created curriculum and classroom resources for other teachers.

Jen and her husband, Christopher, officially became southerners in 2011 and love calling the Swannanoa Valley home! Jen grew up at the Jersey Shore and Christopher is from Connecticut. Carey Dowell

Children's Ministry Assistant

Carey grew up in Boone, North Carolina, but moved to the area in 2022 when she transferred to Montreat College. She graduated with her Bachelor’s in Psychology and Human Services in 2024. She decided to stay in the area to complete graduate school at Montreat, where she is studying for a Master’s in Organizational Leadership.

Carey has always been passionate about children and children’s ministry. She started working in the children’s ministry at her church in Boone when she was 12! Ironically, she was not a fan of Sunday School as a child, but because of that, she loves creating an environment where kids feel comfortable and loved by God.

When not working on school, Carey loves exploring local coffee shops, finding new walking trails, hiking, and spending time with friends!

Bri Dierksen

Student Ministry Director

Bri was born and raised in Orlando, FL and graduated from the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, FL in 2019. She pursued a degree in Comparative Politics, knowing she would likely never use it! Even so, she loved her time in college, concentrating on the Politics of Developing Countries and minoring in Documentary Production. She's been on staff with Young Life the last five years, working on the Food Service team at Windy Gap most recently.

She's always had a heart for church ministry, having come to faith herself in the student ministry of a church in Florida, and is excited to step back into a world she's not been in for some time. Having not grown up in church, Bri is often amazed by the faith of young people. As a friend and a mentor, she seeks to break down walls that in turn create spaces where people can connect and find unlikely friendships. Through hospitality and care, she strives to offer a place where everyone can experience a sense of belonging.

Bri loves to be with people, drink good coffee, watch the Orlando Magic (& pray they don't let her down), eat a home cooked meal, and talk about what music/movies/books you're enjoying!

Kayla Atkinson

Student Ministries Coordinator (Girls)

Kayla grew up in a small beach town on the east coast of Florida. She and her now husband, Brian, began dating while they both competed for Duke's Cross Country and Track teams. They got married after graduation and quickly moved back to Florida for Brian to begin his long medical journey.  During this time, Kayla completed her Masters of Social Work and spent a few precious years working in the hospital as a NICU social worker. After moving to Asheville in 2018 for Brian to start his residency, Kayla began to work at Black Mountain home for Children with foster youth and families and became fully licensed as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She has had the privilege to provide counseling for children and teens during her time at the Children's Home and loved her work. Living in Asheville quickly felt like home, so much so that they decided to make the mountains their permanent home after completion of Brian's training. On the home front, Kayla and Brian have 2 littles, Andie and Reid.

Kayla feels blessed to have been raised in a Christian home and does not remember a time that she didn't know about Jesus' love for her. She was saved as a little girl but has seen God continue to write his testimony in her life as she grows and matures. She is so grateful for her own youth group and several mentors who have made such a big impact along the way. Her work in social work has led her to missional work with youth as well as providing trauma-informed training and therapy. After staying home full time with her kids the last few years, she felt called by God to serve and work in a new way.

In April 2024, the Lord moved to allow Kayla to step into a role as youth ministry coordinator for the girls in our church. She is humbled and excited to develop relationships and grow to love Jesus more alongside them. When the Atkinsons aren't at home or work, they are probably running or hiking on a trail, doing their best to raise little adventurers.

Josiah Stilwell

Boys Ministry Coordinator

Josiah comes from a large family, with humble, Christ following parents, who continue to be a shining example for their family. He has lived in many states including Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, and Alabama. He moved to Black Mountain in August of 2024 to work as an intern at Ridgecrest Conference Center, and start a journey of service, following his passion of serving students and equipping them with knowledge they can use throughout their entire lives to follow and seek Christ. He is excited to join a team where discipleship and developing relationships with students are the focal point for the team.

Josiah has served 3 summers working for FUGE Camps, where he developed a love for guiding students, and all the crazy, fun moments that come with it. His first 2 summers were spent in Fort Worth, Texas, where he led students from across the country at various mission sites across the Dallas-Fort Worth Metro area. His 3rd summer with FUGE Camps, he served as Mission Fuge Site Director for the Philadelphia Team. This role allowed him to work more directly with contacts in Philadelphia. The work in Philadelphia included sending students to work with local churches, local community centers, neighborhood gardens, food banks, and even local parks, to demonstrate Christ’s love through action and evangelism.

Josiah enjoys playing any sport where he can be competitive, especially basketball, so ask him about his favorite players! He loves to spend time with his friends that have also made the Swannanoa valley home, and looks forward to being a part of such a loving church and an amazing community!

Mila Kirkland

Ministry Assistant

Mila grew up on a small farm in Old Fort, NC and spent her formative years in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Prior to her work as Ministry Assistant at Valley Hope Church, Mila worked at home raising and educating her three daughters and assisted in her family’s small custom cabinet business. Before children she worked as Communications Director with The American Chestnut Foundation in Asheville, NC.

Service to others — at school, church, and in her community — has always been important to Mila. As a child her family would visit homebound friends in nursing homes and volunteer at a women’s shelter. As a teen she became a youth deacon at her church in Black Mountain and learned the power of the Gospel through missions work locally and abroad. After graduating from Erskine College with a BS in Biology, she joined Peace Corps Paraguay and worked in a rural community on conservation and agroforestry projects.

Mila and her husband Taylor live in Swannanoa with their three girls Rosie, Sylvia, and Laurel, their chocolate lab Creek, and twelve chickens. Mila enjoys hiking, knitting, reading, and gardening.

Lindsey Barnett

Director of Relief and Recovery

With a lifelong passion for sharing the love and hope of Christ with a hurting world, Lindsey is deeply grateful for the privilege of walking with our neighbors in need. As someone who has personally experienced God’s restoration in profound ways, it is a rich joy to watch it lived out in physical form in the Swannanoa Valley during this season.

Lindsey has spent the past 20 years working in humanitarian aid and is driven by a desire to help organizations lead programs that are delivered with both excellence and efficiency, going beyond good intentions to truly achieve lasting impact. She studied Political Science, Education, and Missions at Ouachita Baptist University and received her Master’s in International Relations: The Effective Distribution of Aid from New York University. She has worked with organizations ranging from the UNU, the International Rescue Committee, MedShare, and the Taskforce for Global Health, along with many others including Spirit in Action, a local nonprofit dedicated to helping those living in manufactured home communities recognize their rights.

Lindsey has lived and taught in Uganda and Japan, and has served in a number of other countries, but feels that there’s no place as close to heaven on earth in beauty and community as the Swannanoa Valley and Valley Hope. She is married to Patrick, who is her greatest gift from God, and they have three very passionate and active children, Lily, Jonathan and Anna. She loves hiking, running, live music and being with community (especially outdoors), and can be found most evenings in this season at a kids' practice or game.

Lisa Ladd

Helene Volunteer Coordinator

Lisa is very grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the Helene Recovery team as the Volunteer and Restoration Coordinator. Even though she is newer to Valley Hope and its neighbors, she longs to see the Swannanoa Valley restored physically and spiritually.

Lisa was raised in the Romanian Orthodox Church in Cleveland, Ohio. This was a very rich and cultural experience for her as she was part of a church family deeply rooted in tradition, values and faith. Because of this, Lisa is passionate about serving others and giving back for all of the received blessings she knows she does not deserve. She started volunteering with various organizations in college. In medical school, another student and her started a free student-run medical clinic for the uninsured in the Toledo area. In Asheville, she has served as a member and chair of the board of the ABCCM Medical Clinic and the Western Carolina Medical Society Foundation at different times- both serving the medically uninsured. She has served on multiple, short-term medical mission trips in places such as the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Belize, Thailand, Canada, and Haiti. Through these experiences, God has put many truly faithful people in Lisa’s life to show her how to serve selflessly and witness to those in need wherever you may be. If Jesus is in the center, then the possibilities of sharing the hope and love of Christ are endless.

Lisa graduated from the College of Wooster with a major in biology and a minor in sociology, and then from Medical College of Ohio. She completed her Family Practice residency with MAHEC here in Asheville over 30 years ago. After many years of patient care to being at home raising twins, Lisa feels very certain the Lord has been leading her to serve her community in another way. She is honored to be a part of this very meaningful work of restoration and care for the neighbors of Valley Hope who were devastated by Helene. May it all be for the Glory of God and His Kingdom.

Lisa is married to Jim, and they have 4 sons, 2 daughters-in-law and 2 granddaughters. She loves spending time with her family, hiking, gardening, kayaking, traveling, reading, painting and using power tools!

Jen Fraser

Director of Communications

Jen grew up on a small farm in Tennessee and graduated the University of Tennessee in 1995 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering.  She then worked for about a decade for John Deere as a software engineer designing and writing code for their engine controls system.  She had not grown up recognizing her creativite side but a life long love of photography eventually led her to venture into graphic design. So began the next decade long career as a freelancer doing web development and graphic design.  It was during this time that she began exploring more traditional venues of artistic expression.  Eventually she stumbled into encaustics which is currently her favorite medium in which to work outside of photography. Now retired from other jobs, she enjoys running, hiking, landscape photography, photography adventure travel and doing encaustic art.

Though she had grown up occasionally going to church as a child, it was through some life hardships that she came to believe in and depend on Jesus.  Her faith has grown and deepened over the years both through study as well as her daily walk with God through the joys and challenges of everyday life.

Jen and Brock have been married since 1995 and have a VERY spoiled cat. Jen is excited to have an opportunity to serve Valley Hope. She is passionate about helping people have the tools, processes and information they need to get connected and grow in Christ centered community.

ELDERS & DEACONS

“Elder” and “Deacon” are terms from the New Testament to describe those who are called to lead and serve a local church. These people are called and approved by the members of Valley Hope.

ELDERS

Elders are responsible for the spiritual care of people in our church in addition to providing oversight and direction for Valley Hope. Connect with the elders by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or click the button below.

Amy Geist

Elder

Amy was born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee. She experienced significant growth in her faith during her time at the University of Tennessee through the campus ministry Cru. It was during those college years that God gave her a deep passion for helping students learn how to walk with Jesus in their everyday lives.

After graduating, Amy joined the staff of Cru in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 2021 the Geist family moved to Western North Carolina to launch Lifelines, Cru’s outdoor ministry, on college campuses across the Southeast. Lifelines combines her love for the outdoors with her heart for student discipleship.

Amy and her family were drawn to Valley Hope Church because of its mission to cultivate intentional, authentic, and missional community. Amy is grateful to serve in a place where people are committed to following Jesus and living life on mission in the Swannanoa Valley.

Amy has been married to Ryan since 2011. They have two children and an Aussie Doodle named Penny. The Geist family enjoys spending time outdoors—especially at the lake—and traveling to new places together. Amy also loves gardening and hosting friends and neighbors in their front yard.

Joe Kirkland

Elder

Joe was born in Texas and grew up in southern MS where he graduated from college at the University of Southern Mississippi graduating in 1976 with a degree in Business Administration and Finance. He came to know Jesus as Savior during his sophomore year at college which launched a five plus decade deepening relationship with Christ.

Upon graduation, Joe enjoyed a 25 year career in leadership/management within retail department stores around the U.S. In 1997, Joe responded to a call into full time Christian ministry specifically in Christian higher education. He joined Lancaster Bible College (LBC) in 2000 in fundraising and in 2003 earned a Masters degree in Biblical Studies from LBC. God called Joe to Montreat College in 2007 where he served in multiple administrative roles until retirement in 2020.

His wife Beverly and high school sweetheart (met in 7th grade) were married during their junior year in college in 1975. They have three adult children and 14 grandchildren. Cortney Pauly and Taylor Kirkland are VHC members along with their combined 6 daughters. Son Brackin and family live in Rosman, NC.

Romans 12:1-2 is a favorite verse which challenges each Christ follower to become a living sacrifice, not conforming to the world, become transformed by a renewed mind, approving God’s good and perfect will for our lives. Praise God for the ministry at VHC. God is at work mightily.

Joellen Maurer

Elder

Growing up in Iowa and the youngest of 7 kids I learned so much about life, family, community, work, and God. We were a family that was always (and mostly joyfully) at church; three times a week in the rain, snow and minus zero temperatures. To this day, I believe the local church is the hope of the world.

I married Paul in my late twenties and we set out on a fantastic journey that has taken us from the west coast to the east coast. We have four adult children, one terrific daughter-in-law, and three adorable grandsons.

In 2014, we were called to Montreat College where Paul is the president. In 2021, we began to worship at Valley Hope Church and became members soon after. My hope and prayer for Valley Hope Church is that it would be a beacon of hope for the Swannanoa Valley, that it would be a haven for the lost and hurting, and that it would be a place of growth and maturing for the believers who come each Sunday.

John Menendez

Elder

John was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from Vanderbilt University where he met his amazing wife, Catherine. After graduating (and spending some time convincing Catherine to marry him) John and Catherine worked in community development for three years in Chinandega, Nicaragua before moving to the Black Mountain area in 2016. John and Catherine are blessed with four kids (Peter, Thomas, Betsy and Frances) and have been a part of Valley Hope since 2021, drawn by the church's welcoming spirit and missional commitment. They continue to be incredibly grateful to walk with such amazing people as they follow after Jesus. John and Catherine have spent the last 10 years as camp directors and love spending time outdoors (and sometimes indoors) as a family.

Niki Swann

Elder

Hi! I was raised in Georgia in a Christian home. I have attended church my whole life and came to know Jesus at an early age. After graduating from Samford University in 2001, I moved to Black Mountain. Those first years after college were difficult. I went through a period of turning from my faith, looking everywhere but to Jesus to figure out who I was and what I needed. I eventually developed anorexia. In this place of desperation, Jesus came to get me. Like David says in Psalm 18, "He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters… He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me."

I know how merciful and good Jesus is because I have experienced it.

In 2005, as yet another example of God's goodness to me, I met my husband Nick. We were married in 2006 and now have two teenage daughters, Julia and Maggie. We have attended Valley Hope since 2013. From our first Sunday here, we have seen the way our church and its members seek to follow Jesus. Through sermons, relationships, community groups, and in so many other ways, our family has learned how to follow Jesus at this church.

I work as a Mental Health Counselor with a practice in Black Mountain. I love my work! I also enjoy spending time with friends and family, working out, reading, baking, and being outside.

I am thankful and excited to serve members of our church with the session. May Jesus continue to lead us as we trust Him together.

Ryan McLellan

Elder

My wife, Kelly and I have lived in the Asheville area for the past 27 years and have been a part of Valley Hope church since 2009. During this time, Kelly and I both have had the opportunity to serve on the session as elders. It has been a blessing to serve our church and such a sweet time of personal growth in the Spirit for us over these years, as we have watched our church community grow. Kelly and I have two grown children, Gray in Charleston, SC and Willa in Boone, NC.

I have been a General Contractor and custom homebuilder for the past 25 years and love spending by down time outdoors and with my family. I enjoy fishing, hunting, paddling and quite honestly just cutting the grass and working in our yard.

I’m excited to be serving again and watching how the Lord is working in Valley Hope in this new season.

Tyler Caruso

Elder

My wife Kelley and I have lived in Asheville since 2015 and have been a part of the Valley Hope community since 2021. We have three children - Vivian, Jude, and Noah.

It’s a privilege to serve this church, walking alongside folks as we all discover how much we are truly loved by God. It’s my prayer that God would use the people of Valley Hope to extend His kindness, gentleness, grace and peace to everyone and everything that we are brought into relationship with. That we would be a people defined by our unhurried and attentive gaze upon our Creator and His created and filled with joy by that.

I practice dentistry in the Asheville area and enjoy cycling, cooking/BBQ, reading, hiking, backpacking, sunrises, and enjoying time with my family.

Wes Hite

Elder

Jenny and I have been happily married for 25 years and have called Black Mountain and the Swannanoa Valley home since 2010. For the past 15 years, we've been deeply rooted in the Valley Hope community, cherishing the meaningful relationships we've built along the way.

We are blessed with three growing children and a shared passion for serving others. I feel honored to walk alongside such devoted individuals who truly seek the heart of God.

Professionally, I run a small family medicine practice in town and serve as the medical director for a local free clinic. Having spent a significant part of my life in and around the military, I am passionate about travel, overseas mission work, and sharing God’s love beyond our borders.

Inspired by Paul’s words to Timothy—“The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith”—my prayer is to reflect the love of Jesus in all that I do.

DEACONS

Deacons have always been called by the Church to oversee and carry out ministries of service and compassion (Acts 6), from simple duties like that of usher to meeting physical needs of those inside and outside the congregation. If you need help, please fill out the form below.

A “Deacon’s Fund” has been established as a means through which certain financial needs of the congregation and others in the local community may be met discreetly through funds provided by the church body from targeted offerings. This account is independent from the church budget and administered by the Deacons after collaborative evaluation of proposals including follow-up assessments, as needed, to determine the most appropriate method(s) for helping to meet needs (e.g., financial, counsel, service). Deacon Fund Guidelines

If you'd like to give to the deacon fund, you can do that online. Just be sure to select "Deacons" when prompted

Meet our Deacons

Beth Caldwell

Deacon

I am originally from Jacksonville, Florida, but have been a long time resident of Black Mountain. I was a charter member of Swannanoa Valley Presbyterian Church.
As a retired school librarian, my favorite things in the world are still kids and books! I enjoy teaching very much and it is a priority for me to be involved in the children's ministry of Valley Hope. I now work as a part time bookkeeper for my son's insurance agency.

My family is my heart and I am blessed with quite a tribe. My circle includes 4 children and 16 grandchildren.

I love to testify to God's sustaining Grace and Provision over many years and seasons of my life. My heart's desire is to be obedient and to serve.

Christopher Aitken

Deacon

Though a native of Connecticut, Christopher has called Western North Carolina his home since he moved here in 2010. Since that time, he has been the Director of Choral Activities at Asheville Christian Academy. Prior to his appointment at 'ACA,' he earned a Bachelors degree in Music Education/Piano from Grove City College, and a Masters degree in Choral Conducting from Houghton College. Since 2002, Christopher has served in a variety of middle/high school, college, and church music jobs. He also spent many years working as a bank teller. He met his beautiful wife Jennifer while at Houghton, and they married in 2012. The best part of his day is always his girls - Jennifer, plus daughters Annabelle and Charlotte. Christopher enjoys teaching, cooking, travel, playing piano, composing music, taking walks and drives, and playing games with his daughters.

As a member of the church worship team and the director of the Valley Hope Choir, he enjoys using his musical gifts to serve the Lord and the flock. Empowering the congregational voice as well as identifying and encouraging one's musical gifts are two of his passions. He is very grateful to be a part of the Valley Hope community.

Elise Windmiller

Deacon

Elise Windmiller joined Valley Hope Church in the year 2021 with her husband, Dan, and their two girls, Harper and Aviana. Elise and Dan have been a part of the Black Mountain community since attending Montreat College and marrying soon after graduation in 2007. Their family has been involved with Black Mountain Home for Children's ministry since that time, where Dan runs the recreation program. While their faith has led them through ups and downs, it has served to refine their love of Jesus and His church. Elise currently homeschools their girls and loves to explore nature, photography, and connecting with others through meals and conversations. Her heart is for those who feel hopeless and often left hurting in their pain, those who sit unseen, and she is honored to be a part of serving the church's body as a Deacon.

Garrett Prewett

Deacon

Garrett Prewett. joined the Valley Hope family in August of 2018. Garrett graduated from the Liberty University 2017 and discovered his love for the valley while working at Camp Ridgecrest for Boys during his summers in college. After growing up overseas as the son of Missionaries he decided to make Black Mountain his home in the states. During his time as an intern at Ridgecrest Camps he met his wife, Becky Prewett. After working in the car dealership industry he is currently working as a consultant for credit unions. He loves playing soccer in the Asheville rec leagues and spending weekends hiking and camping with his wife and awesome dog Hardy. Since leaving Ridgecrest summer camps he has transitioned to serving as a Wyldlyfe leader for Owen middle school, spending time with teenage boys and leading them to Jesus.

Joe Donovan

Deacon

Joe is a graduate of Western Carolina University and moved to Asheville in 2006. He cherishes the authentic relationships he has developed throughout the community over the years.

Joe and his wife, Elisabeth, reside in South Asheville where they are raising their two daughters - Anne and Jayme. Their family is grateful for having Christ-centered programs such as WyldLife and Youth Commission International that support students in the T.C. Roberson School District.

He has served on the Children’s Ministry Committee at Valley Hope and is a volunteer Sunday school teacher. He’s been blessed with opportunities to stay active in an activity he enjoys by coaching basketball for the South Buncombe Youth Sports League and Buncombe County Special Olympics, along with continuing to play and fellowship with a group at the Asheville YMCA.

He is the founder of Simply Signs, a locally owned business serving the custom signage project needs of the region. Joe’s heart for service comes from a desire to faithfully steward the gifts God has entrusted to him, and he is honored to serve as a deacon with humility, compassion, and faithfulness.

Keith Stickler

Deacon

Keith Stickler has been a member of Valley Hope from the time it came to Rockdale Ave. March 2019. Previously he  served in the offices of Youth Director, deacon, elder and worship team Director at SVPCA. His background is in music ministries since high school. Organizations he was employed with were Breath of Life Evangelistic Ministry (KS), Christian Aid Mission (VA), PEF Ministries as Director of children's ministries (GA.) Currently he is employed at the Billy Graham Training Center as their Building Maintenance Supervisor since 1990, where his passion and motto has been "preparing this place for people to meet with God". Keith has a servant's heart and enjoys meeting the needs of others as well as playing his bass, riding his motorcycle and spending time outdoors with his wife.

Lindsey Barnett

Deacon

Rick Tozier

Deacon

Rick and Jen moved to western North Carolina in 2022—Jen’s childhood home—and quickly found their church community at Valley Hope. Rick has a heart for serving others through hands-on care and encouragement. He earned a degree in Economics from Gordon College and initially considered international relief and development, but God led him down a different path. After 14 years in manufacturing and corporate America, Rick launched his own construction business in 2005 and now serves as Managing Partner at Lake James Custom Homes. He uses his building and leadership skills to bless others through repair and construction projects, most recently during Valley Hope’s Hurricane Helene relief efforts. Rick and Jen have four grown sons and two daughters-in-law, and they enjoy mountain biking, hiking, and traveling in their free time.
