Meet our Team
at Valley Hope Church
STAFF
Anthony Rodriguez
Anthony Rodriguez has been pastor of Valley Hope since Fall 2011. He served as a preacher and leader of Isight (which was Valley Hope’s original name) since his days as a student in Montreat College, when the church was started in a bar in Black Mountain. After a year serving in Cape Town, South Africa, Anthony entered studies full-time at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Charlotte. He graduated and became an EPC Commissioned Pastor in 2012. He was ordained as a Teaching Elder in 2017. Anthony serves Valley Hope as a preacher and pastor and by leading the elder team. Anthony and the elders are responsible for discerning and communicating Valley Hope’s vision while caring for and equipping the people for the work of the Gospel in whatever context God calls them. He also serves as an adjunct professor at Montreat College. Anthony enjoys trying to stay active at the gym, playing and watching soccer, or golfing, mostly badly. And of course, he’s probably reading several books from the various stacks around his house and office.
Anthony married his best friend, Erin, in 2006, following his graduation from Montreat. Together they have three beautiful daughters, Ryann, Alethia, and Hope and one son, Valor. Erin works in construction and remodeling, working with her hands to make beautiful things. If she’s not working at her job, she’s probably at home building something else to make their lives better.
The Rodriguez family loves Valley Hope and is thrilled to be in the Swannanoa Valley, continuing to invest in the community that has given so much to them for so long.
Amy Berry
Amy Berry has served as the Director of Discipleship for Valley Hope Church since the Fall of 2020. She graduated from Furman University in 2001 where she discovered the ministry of Young Life and felt a call to be in relational ministry. After she and Phil were married in 2003, they moved to Gwinnett County in Georgia where they were part of a Young Life/ church partnership for the next 4 years. They learned a ton about youth ministry, church work, nonprofits, fundraising and the importance of community. Phil was asked to come work at Camp Ridgecrest for Boys where he had been coming since he was 9 years old so they packed up and moved to Black Mountain, NC. Phil currently serves as Executive Director of Ridgecrest Camps. From Fall of 2007-Fall of 2020, Amy served on the Young Life staff of Asheville/Buncombe County in various roles until God asked her to do something new and serve at Valley Hope. Amy is passionate about people learning how to follow Jesus every day of their lives while always having eyes to see others that do not yet know him.
Amy and Phil have 2 daughters, Piper and Lily who are in the Owen schools. Amy is passionate about our schools and helping people in our Valley that may not have resources that they need. She wants the people of Valley Hope to be a people that is always looking up to God, in to love each other and out to see who is there to be brought into God's family.
Amy loves walking and hiking, reading, eating good food and drinking good drinks and traveling. Please let her know if you ever want to go on a walk or get a cup of coffee!
Jen Aitken
Jen Aitken serves as the Director of Children's Ministry at Valley Hope. Jen graduated from Houghton College with a degree in Vocal Performance and then later received her Elementary Teaching license from UNC Asheville. She had a blast teaching Kindergarten at Asheville Christian Academy before becoming a stay-at-home mom. As a stay-at-home mom, Jen taught voice lessons part-time and created curriculum and classroom resources for other teachers.
Mila Kirkland
Mila grew up on a small farm in Old Fort, NC and spent her formative years in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Prior to her work as Ministry Assistant at Valley Hope Church, Mila worked at home raising and educating her three daughters and assisted in her family’s small custom cabinet business. Before children she worked as Communications Director with The American Chestnut Foundation in Asheville, NC.
Service to others — at school, church, and in her community — has always been important to Mila. As a child her family would visit homebound friends in nursing homes and volunteer at a women’s shelter. As a teen she became a youth deacon at her church in Black Mountain and learned the power of the Gospel through missions work locally and abroad. After graduating from Erskine College with a BS in Biology, she joined Peace Corps Paraguay and worked in a rural community on conservation and agroforestry projects.
Mila and her husband Taylor live in Swannanoa with their three girls Rosie, Sylvia, and Laurel, their chocolate lab Creek, and twelve chickens. Mila enjoys hiking, knitting, reading, and gardening.
Kayla Atkinson
Kayla grew up in a small beach town on the east coast of Florida. She and her now husband, Brian, began dating while they both competed for Duke's Cross Country and Track teams. They got married after graduation and quickly moved back to Florida for Brian to begin his long medical journey. During this time, Kayla completed her Masters of Social Work and spent a few precious years working in the hospital as a NICU social worker. After moving to Asheville in 2018 for Brian to start his residency, Kayla began to work at Black Mountain home for Children with foster youth and families and became fully licensed as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She has had the privilege to provide counseling for children and teens during her time at the Children's Home and loved her work. Living in Asheville quickly felt like home, so much so that they decided to make the mountains their permanent home after completion of Brian's training. On the home front, Kayla and Brian have 2 littles, Andie and Reid.
Kayla feels blessed to have been raised in a Christian home and does not remember a time that she didn't know about Jesus' love for her. She was saved as a little girl but has seen God continue to write his testimony in her life as she grows and matures. She is so grateful for her own youth group and several mentors who have made such a big impact along the way. Her work in social work has led her to missional work with youth as well as providing trauma-informed training and therapy. After staying home full time with her kids the last few years, she felt called by God to serve and work in a new way.

Jen Fraser
Jen graduated the University of Tennessee in 1995 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. She then worked for about a decade for John Deere as a software engineer designing and writing code for their engine controls system. She had not grown up recognizing her creativite side but a life long love of photography eventually led her to venture into graphic design. So began the next decade long career as a freelancer doing web development and graphic design. It was during this time that she began exploring more traditional venues of artistic expression. Eventually she stumbled into encaustics which is currently her favorite medium in which to work outside of photography. Now retired from other jobs, she enjoys running, hiking, landscape photography, photography adventure travel and doing encaustic art.
Though she had grown up occasionally going to church as a child, it was through some life hardships that she came to believe in and depend on Jesus. Her faith has grown and deepened over the years both through study as well as her daily walk with God through the joys and challenges of everyday life.
Jen and Brock have been married since 1995 and have two VERY spoiled cats. Jen is excited to have an opportunity to serve Valley Hope. She is passionate about helping people have the tools, processes and information they need to get connected and grow in Christ centered community.

Elders are responsible for the spiritual care of people in our church in addition to providing oversight and direction for Valley Hope. Connect with the elders by emailing
Ben Lillard
Ben lives in Black Mountain with his wife, Tiffany, and two daughters. Ben and Tiffany enjoy looking at how God forms their lives and the lives of those around them. Early in 2013, God brought them to iSight/Valley Hope. They count it a joy and tremendous blessing to see and experience Jesus growing the individuals in Valley Hope and the collective body.
Ben loves Jesus, his family, and his Valley Hope family. In his role as an elder, Ben hopes to encourage others to take scripture, prayer, conversation, reconciliation, and the whole life of faith seriously, with confidence that the faith, hope, love, and grace of Jesus Christ can and will transform everything.
When not enjoying his work at Black Mountain Home for Children, Ben looks to spend lots of time with his family, have good conversations, read, find more work to do, and be outdoors.
Jason Covert
I am incredibly thankful to walk through this life with my wife Elodie and we are blessed to have two awesome kids, Abigail and Micah. One of our greatest passions and joys as a family is serving the children and youth at Black Mountain Home for Children where Elodie and I have worked and volunteered in various roles for over 15 years. While I continue to volunteer at BMH, I currently run a Home Repair business and love the opportunity that provides to work with my hands and help people in need. My hope and prayer for Valley Hope is that we never forget all that God has done and how He continues to provide for His people. In response may we give thanks and reach out to serve the people in our Valley.
Joellen Maurer
Growing up in Iowa and the youngest of 7 kids I learned so much about life, family, community, work, and God. We were a family that was always (and mostly joyfully) at church; three times a week in the rain, snow and minus zero temperatures. To this day, I believe the local church is the hope of the world.
I married Paul in my late twenties and we set out on a fantastic journey that has taken us from the west coast to the east coast. We have four adult children, one terrific daughter-in-law, and three adorable grandsons.
In 2014, we were called to Montreat College where Paul is the president. In 2021, we began to worship at Valley Hope Church and became members soon after. My hope and prayer for Valley Hope Church is that it would be a beacon of hope for the Swannanoa Valley, that it would be a haven for the lost and hurting, and that it would be a place of growth and maturing for the believers who come each Sunday.
Kelly McLellan
Kelly lives Black Mountain, NC with her family. Recently retiring from her position of “homeschool mom”, she spends her newfound free time exploring what it means to be fruitful in this next season of life. When she is not writing, or on her yoga mat, you can find her hanging out with friends and family, gardening, making jewelry and other art, playing with her dogs or reading and contemplating life’s deepest questions. A teacher, equipper, and helper at heart, she is passionate about helping others to enter the deep and Holy place within in order to connect with God and abide in the Spirit.
Randy Stephens
As an elder at Valley Hope it is my desire to minister to the needs of the members of Valley Hope and make a positive contribution to the Swannanoa and Black Mountain communities by living a life that reflects my personal commitment to Christ. I long for Valley Hope Church to continue becoming a place of refuge and solace from the division that seems to permeate our country, a place where any and all are welcome and feel acceptance and the love of Christ any day of the week. I am retired from IBM, and CEO of a small business. My wife Patti and I have three daughters and sons in law, two live in Black Mountain and attend Valley Hope, one lives in Albuquerque, NM. We have seven grandchildren (six girls and a boy) Five of our grandchildren attend Valley Hope. The other two live in Albuquerque, NM.
Tyler Caruso
My wife Kelley and I have lived in Asheville since 2015 and have been a part of the Valley Hope community since 2021. We have three children - Vivian, Jude, and Noah.
It’s a privilege to serve this church, walking alongside folks as we all discover how much we are truly loved by God. It’s my prayer that God would use the people of Valley Hope to extend His kindness, gentleness, grace and peace to everyone and everything that we are brought into relationship with. That we would be a people defined by our unhurried and attentive gaze upon our Creator and His created and filled with joy by that.
I practice dentistry in the Asheville area and enjoy cycling, cooking/BBQ, reading, hiking, backpacking, sunrises, and enjoying time with my family.
Request Assistance
Our Deacons are here to care for folks in need when possible. Please reach out to us if you are needing help. We may be able to assist you.
DEACONS
Deacons have always been called by the Church to oversee and carry out ministries of service and compassion (Acts 6), from simple duties like that of usher to meeting physical needs of those inside and outside the congregation. Connect with the deacons by emailing
A “Deacon’s Fund” has been established as a means through which certain financial needs of the congregation and others in the local community may be met discreetly through funds provided by the church body from targeted offerings. This account is independent from the church budget and administered by the Deacons after collaborative evaluation of proposals including follow-up assessments, as needed, to determine the most appropriate method(s) for helping to meet needs (e.g., financial, counsel, service). Deacon Fund Guidelines
If you'd like to give to the deacon fund, you can do that online. Just be sure to select "Deacons" when prompted
Beth Caldwell
I am originally from Jacksonville, Florida, but have been a long time resident of Black Mountain. I was a charter member of Swannanoa Valley Presbyterian Church.
As a retired school librarian, my favorite things in the world are still kids and books! I enjoy teaching very much and it is a priority for me to be involved in the children's ministry of Valley Hope. I now work as a part time bookkeeper for my son's insurance agency.
My family is my heart and I am blessed with quite a tribe. My circle includes 4 children and 16 grandchildren.
I love to testify to God's sustaining Grace and Provision over many years and seasons of my life. My heart's desire is to be obedient and to serve.
Elise Windmiller
Elise Windmiller joined Valley Hope Church in the year 2021 with her husband, Dan, and their two girls, Harper and Aviana. Elise and Dan have been a part of the Black Mountain community since attending Montreat College and marrying soon after graduation in 2007. Their family has been involved with Black Mountain Home for Children's ministry since that time, where Dan runs the recreation program. While their faith has led them through ups and downs, it has served to refine their love of Jesus and His church. Elise currently homeschools their girls and loves to explore nature, photography, and connecting with others through meals and conversations. Her heart is for those who feel hopeless and often left hurting in their pain, those who sit unseen, and she is honored to be a part of serving the church's body as a Deacon.
